Advice From Washington Square
All photos taken in Washington Square Park
June - August 2025
Living a few blocks Washington Square Park for a summer, I became entranced by the space’s energy. The people. The way that the people of Washington Square carry themselves, style themselves, and just live. During this summer, I frequented the park, always as a participant, sometimes as a photographer. I joined a group of flow artists in the park, juggling with LED juggling balls late into the night. I attended marches, protests, poetry readings, and salsa dancing events there. Sometimes I sat quietly, other times I danced.
In these photos, I have saught to capture what I love about this space: the people. With each indevidual, I asked the same question - What advice do you have?

"To begin my answer, I want to tell a story my dad told me from when he was around my age. While hanging out with friends, he took a dose of acid way higher than intended. Many hours later, he wakes up on a rooftop, his friends relieved that he had finally come to. According to them, he had spent his trip wandering the dangerous streets of Philadelphia, blissfully unaware of anything happening around him, his friends anxiously following to make sure he didn’t get hurt. Multiple times, he would stop walking, seemingly settle down, only to pull out his frisbee, throw it once, and continue walking. This went on for about 14 hours. Today, my father runs a very successful pediatricians office, where he is beloved by his patients.
The reason I am telling you this seemingly random information is that if you’re my age, it can be really easy to feel like you have no idea what you’re doing, like you’re just wandering around life aimlessly. This is a normal part of life, and is something everyone must go through. Stay hopeful and keep your eye to the future, with time you will figure everything out. Before you can become a pediatrician, you must wander around Philly on acid." - Max

“It’s okay to feel lost. That’s what we were brought into this world for. Without mistakes we wouldn’t be able to grow or move forward. I get caught in my head sometimes overthinking about life, wondering how my future might look like… One thing I realized was that sitting and doing nothing is not going to get me to where I want to be… Take a moment to get to know yourself. Literally do something, because if it’s not you, then who’s going to do it for you?” - Brooke
